Details of this update and their benefits to you

Item Type Details
Real-time network connection monitoring New Monitoring of real-time traffic flows through any NetBox network interface is now possible. This allows you to answer the eternal question, "why is my link running slowly?", and is invaluable in debugging a variety of network related problems. It is possible monitor multiple interfaces simultaneously. To access this feature go to Administration | connection monitoring in the NetBox web interface.
New DHCP options screen New Custom DHCP options for the NetBox DHCP server can now be configured. These can be set under Configuration | Advanced LAN by selecting a particular LAN interface and then clicking Edit in the Custom DHCP Options field. This screen includes most standard DHCP options. If required, more options can be added under Configuration | Advanced LAN | Modify DHCP Option Fields.
Automatic DHCP lease culling New The NetBox will now automatically remove old DHCP leases if the number of available leases is running low. This culling process occurs daily. The culling threshold can be configured under Configuration | Advanced | DHCP server lease culling threshold in the NetBox web interface.
Update expiry date display New The date that firmware updates are due to expire for a particular NetBox are now shown on the home screen of the web interface. A warning is shown if updates have expired.
Active PPTP user display New Usernames and data statistics for active logins to the NetBox PPTP server are now shown under Administration | active remote VPNs in the web interface.
Email Monitoring purge New Email Monitoring records can now be manually purged. See Email Monitoring | config in the web interface.
MTU option for ethernet connections New The Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU) of ethernet based Internet connections can now be manually set. This option is found under Configuration | Connection | MTU in the web interface.
Cross site scripting filtering in webmail and webmail enhancements Enhancement Extensive filtering of emails has been put in place to eliminate potential cross-site scripting issues with the NetBoxes webmail feature. Additionally, the display of HTML emails through the webmail feature has been greatly improved, making most emails far more readable.
Improved Network Monitoring interface statistics screen Enhancement The Network Monitoring interfaces screen is now much quicker in responding to user queries. Additionally, PPTP interfaces are now shown by the user who logged in. See the difference at Network Monitoring | interfaces.
Improved email queue screen Enhancement

The NetBox email queue screen has been improved. By default only the first 15 queue entries are now displayed to avoid large outputs when the queue is large (this can be changed). Additionally, clearing of the queue now requires an extra confirmation step and the screen has been generally improved asthetically.

Netlog processing time display Enhancement During periods of high network load the Network Monitoring feature will develop a backlog of data to process. This can mean that the data displayed with Network Monitoring may not be real-time. To view the time of the currently processed Network Monitoring data you can now go to Network Monitoring | config in the web interface.
TCP based connection tests Enhancement The NetBox checks link integrity once per minute by performing a network test against various test hosts. This was done by using ICMP 'ping' packets, however several ISPs have now disabled pings in response to the latest worm attacks. The NetBox now uses a TCP based method to perform link tests.
Security Updates Fix Security updates to the NetBox system kernel, POP3 server and DHCP client have been made in response to new security vulnerabilities and threats.
Slow POP3 email retrieval when link down resolved Fix Logins to the NetBox POP3 server from the LAN were slow when the Internet link was down. This has been resolved.
Email scanning hang fixed Fix A hang during scanning of emails with large numbers of attachments has been fixed
Link info display corrected Fix The link statistics shown at Administration | link info are now correct (was out by a power of 10). Also, the link statistics are now scaled to more easily understood units.

Minor bug fixes Fix Other minor bug fixes and security enhancements have been made.

Additions for Release 22a (Nessus 22a)

Item Type Details
Verisign SiteFinder workaround New On the 15th of September Verisign, the company which controls the root name servers for all .net and .com top level domains, activated a system called SiteFinder. This system causes all DNS names which haven't already been delegated to point to a Verisign advertising server and search engine. Unfortunately, this system causes numerous problems with network and DNS diagnostics, spam detection and also raises ethical and privacy concerns. The NetBox now implements a workaround which prevents the SiteFinder system from working and restores standard DNS resolution behaviour for .net and .com domains.
