Design Data Success Story
Queensland based Design Data Management has regained control of its network, dramatically improving the efficiency of traffic by using a range of reporting and management tools included in the NetBox. The NetBox, which also includes web and email filtering has transformed the operation of Design Data Management by pinpointing when the network is being misused and who is responsible.
The Situation
Prior to installing a NetBox, Design Data's network was struggling to cope with the volume of traffic. The company, which supplies products to the Data and Communications and Electrical and Security Industries, relies on the internet for 30 percent of its orders and communications. But mission critical applications were being slowed down by internet abuse.
"Business applications were running but just not at the pace you would expect them to happen," Design Data Managing Director Eric Blackwood says.
The Solution
By installing a NetBox, the managers at Design Data were quickly able to identify the reason for the sluggishness of their network. The NetBox automatically delivers regular reports on internet use, which show which sites are being used or abused, who is using them and when they are being used.
Design Data discovered staff members were downloading movies, music and other inappropriate material, degrading the network bandwidth and jeopardizing the operation of the whole business. That has changed dramatically since the NetBox was installed.
"We had a lot of problems with content that shouldn't have been coming through to our business," Mr Blackwood says. "The NetBox has cleaned all of that up. We have quicker access to the internet and we have more control of the business. It's a very good solution."
Design Data has used the NetBox to block several non-work related sites and continues to monitor the network to maintain control over how accessible sites are used. If the internet is being abused Design Data managers can tell at a glance where the problems lie. The NetBox gives Design Data the flexibility to block sites at certain times of the day and to choose which sites can be accessed by groups or the whole company. "There's a broad range of tools in the NetBox," Mr Blackwood says. "Installing the NetBox has given us many more avenues to control our network. Previously we had no control whatsoever. It has certainly helped our company."
